RAINY EVENING ON THE HSIAO AND THE HSIANG

Taikan Yokoyama (1868 - 1958) was born at the beginning of Japan's modern period of westernization. He studies under Kakuzo (or Tenshin) Okakura, one of the leaders of Japan's art world, and worked to create a new style of purely Japanese painting. This painting was displayed at the 1948 Japan Art Institute Exhibition. The scenic Hsiao and Hsiang rivers were a popular subject for early Chinese landscape painters. In this ink painting, the forests and rocks, the person walking with a half-opened umbrella, the docked boats, and the mist moving over the wide expanse of water are rendered in dark and light shades of carbon ink. It is an appealing evocation of Far Eastern refinement.
